How OptimizeResume Calculates Resume Match

Direct answer

OptimizeResume derives criteria from the specific job posting, checks each criterion against the resume, assigns an evidence state, and then computes a weighted score out of 100 across six categories: required qualifications 25, relevant experience and responsibility level 25, skills and capabilities 20, demonstrated results 15, job-specific language 10, and clarity and readability 5. The arithmetic runs on our servers against a frozen copy of the criteria, so a result can be re-checked. This is the OptimizeResume rubric, not an employer's score.

Key takeaways

  • Criteria come from the posting you supply, not from a generic template.
  • Every credited criterion is backed by a quote from your resume that we verify.
  • Weights are fixed and published: 25 / 25 / 20 / 15 / 10 / 5.
  • Opportunity constraints such as location and salary are excluded from the evidence score.
  • The weights are our editorial judgement, not an externally validated standard.

Step 1 — derive criteria from the posting

We read the job description and extract discrete criteria: required qualifications, preferred qualifications, responsibilities, skills, and expected outcomes. Each criterion keeps a quote from the posting so you can see where it came from. Mandatory constraints — licences, authorisation, on-site expectations — are captured separately from the scored criteria.

Step 2 — assign an evidence state

Evidence states and their effect
StateMeaningCredit
DemonstratedThe resume shows this clearlyFull
Partial evidenceRelated work is shown, but not at the level or scope asked forHalf
Not demonstratedNo evidence found in this resume — the experience may still existNone
Confirmed absentThe resume shows this is not presentNone

The distinction between the last two states is deliberate and central. 'Not demonstrated' is a documentation finding and often fixable today. 'Confirmed absent' is a fit finding.

Step 3 — verify the evidence

A criterion is only credited when the supporting quote is verified against the actual resume text. Loose keyword matching is not used for scoring, and a claim without verifiable supporting text is not counted.

Step 4 — weight and total

The 100-point framework
CategoryWeight
Required professional qualifications25
Relevant experience and responsibility level25
Skills and capabilities20
Demonstrated results15
Job-specific language10
Clarity and readability5

Category scores are combined into a single figure on our servers. Where a category genuinely does not apply to a posting, it is marked as such and the total is normalised across the categories that do apply, so an inapplicable category is not counted as a failure.

What is deliberately excluded

  • Location, remote eligibility, salary expectations, travel, and similar opportunity constraints. These describe the fit of the opportunity, not the strength of your evidence, so they are reported separately.
  • Keyword frequency. Repeating a term does not add points.
  • Anything you have not written or confirmed. We do not infer experience to fill a gap.

Mandatory requirements

A confirmed unmet mandatory requirement is surfaced prominently and prevents an unqualified 'strong fit' recommendation, regardless of the numeric score.

Frequently asked questions

Are the weights configurable per user?
No. The weights are fixed so results are comparable across scans of the same resume, and they are published here so you can judge whether they match your own priorities.
Why is job-specific language only 10 points?
Because wording alignment aids recognition but is not evidence of experience. Skills, responsibility level, and results carry the weight for that reason.
Can the same resume and job produce different scores?
Criteria are frozen with the analysis and the arithmetic is deterministic, so a saved result is stable. A fresh scan of an edited resume will differ where the evidence differs.
Does the score account for the other applicants?
No. It has no information about the pool, and no external tool does.
